Pax et Viriditas means "Peace and Greenness."

Viriditas-literally 'greenness'-was a favorite word of St. Hildegard of Bingen. For Hildegard, the greening of the earth was more than a beautiful feature of creation. It becomes an image of God's life and mercy at work, restoring what is dry, weary, and barren and bringing it once again to life.

Hildegard could speak of life itself as mercy: all that lives receives its life as gift. The green leaf, the flouring garden, and the renewed soul all point beyond themselves to the generosity of the One who gives life. 

Joined with pax (peace) et (and) viriditas (greenness) become a little prayer of mercy.

A fitting reminder or the gardener, the weary soul, or anyone learning to recognize grace growing quietly in ordinary life.
