Mary is often referred to as the 'moon' in Catholic tradition. St. Bonaventure and some other writings of the Church fathers reference the moon in direct relation to Our Lady as she reflects the Light of her Son.  She is described by them as 'mysterium lunae (the mystery of the moon).
